Madonna Offended by Bruno Adoption Gag

Bookmark and Share

Pop icon Madonna and longtime friend Sacha Baron Cohen got into a squabble recently over a gag pulled by Cohen's alter ego Bruno.

In his new movie, Bruno takes a shot at Madonna's 2006 adoption of Malawi toddler David Banda by scooping up an African baby from an airport baggage drop and then proclaims, "Angelina's got one, Madonna's got one, now Bruno's got one!" Bruno then goes on to appear on a talk show to defend the "adoption" in what is sure to be one of the film's most controversial scenes.

But recently, after the Material Girl ran into some real-life trouble adopting a second child from Malawi, the bit apparently hit a little too close to home. Sure enough, she told the Daily Mirror newspaper that she found Bruno's routine "insensitive."

Even the outrageous Bruno knows that pissing off one of the highest-profile stars on the planet is bad for business. You'll remember that the pair collaborated on Madonna's "Music" video in 2000. And Madonna even appears in Bruno, performing a Band Aid parody number. Now Cohen has reached out to Madonna with an apology to make sure the two stay on good terms. According to a source, "Sacha is always out to make great comedy - and if he upsets people along the way, so be it. But when word reached him that Madonna thought his sketch was insensitive, he sent her a bouquet of flowers to say, 'No hard feelings'."

And this bit of news will likely help her get over Bruno's prank: the Malawian Supreme Court has finally approved Madonna's adoption of 4-year-old Mercy James, and the girl's biological father has also given his consent to the adoption.

No word on whether Madonna will take Mercy to the theatre on July 10 to see her "Uncle Sacha" when Bruno opens worldwide.
